American Girl has unveiled its “Girl of the Year” doll for 2017, and her name is Gabriela McBride – a poet and dancer. According to a press release, Gabriela is described as a “true creative talent”, who utilizes art in the forms of poetry and dance, to break barriers and overcome her personal challenge of stuttering.
The 18-inch, brown-eyed and curly-haired doll is set to hit the market on January 1, 2017. Included with the doll are a variety of accessories, including a book, athletic-wear, toy microphone and headphones. Also, beginning in the Spring of 2017, additional Gabriela books and accessories will become available. The 3-part book series, authored by Teresa E. Harris, will give a deeper insight into Gabriela’s upbringing and how she stumbled upon her artistic gifts.
Moreover from the doll and books, American Girl is partnering with Scholastic in a curriculum program, “Express Yourself”, geared towards introducing students to poetry. And in honor of National Poetry Month in April, will host a poetry contest for kids.
