Gabourey Sidibe (33) opened up to PEOPLE magazine for the first time regarding her recent journey to healthier living. She revealed that she underwent laparoscopic bariatric surgery following her jolting Type 2 diabetes diagnosis. Throughout her rise to stardom, the Empire actress had often come under harsh criticism and scrutiny regarding her weight. To which she previously stated that she was content just the way she was.
But Gabby, while having always exuded an air of confidence, admitted that she has battled depression, anxiety and bulimia. Following the surgery, she is no longer diabetic and has undergone an amazing transformation through the help of a trainer and eating healthier meals.
“I just didn’t want to worry. I truly didn’t want to worry about all the effects that go along with diabetes. I genuinely [would] worry all the time about losing my toes.” – Gabourey Sidibe/PEOPLE interview
