Charleena Lyles (30) was shot to death by Seattle police, with gunshot wounds to her chest and abdomen after calling 911 for help following an attempted burglary at her apartment.

According to family members, Lyles was also pregnant at the time and battling mental health issues for about a year, but was not a threat. The police report states that she called 911 around 10 a.m. Sunday to report an intruder at her Magnuson Park residence. Two Seattle officers were dispatched to the location, where a statement reports that they were “confronted by a woman with a knife”. It continued to read that both of the officers fired their weapons – killing Lyles. There were also several children in the apartment at the time; they are now being cared for by family members.

A devastated Lyles family, and much of the community is questioning why deadly force even had to be used at all.

“What is she going do to all you police? You big ass men? I can take her down, I know you can.” – Monika Williams, victim’s sister

The family continues to demand answers, and of no surprise, both officers were placed on paid administrative leave pending investigation.
