On Father’s Day, a family and community is mourning the loss of a a 17-year-old Muslim teenager of Reston, Virginia – Nabra Hassanen. Hassanen was reported missing after leaving prayer at All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) in Sterling, followed by a visit to IHOP with friends on Saturday night/early Sunday morning.

Shoyeb Hassan, the co-chair of ADAMS, explained that during the last 10 days of Ramadan, the mosque holds extra prayers at midnight and 2 a.m., and its members often go to McDonald’s or the 24-hour IHOP to eat before beginning their fast at sunrise…..as Nabra and her friends were doing.  Police and a mosque official confirmed that a group of ~5 teens were walking back from breakfast at IHOP early Sunday when they were confronted by a motorist. All but one of the teens, Hassanen, were able to flee to the mosque. Once reaching ADAMS, the group reported that Hassanen had been left behind, prompting hours of police search.

Her remains were recovered on Sunday in a pond in the 21500 block of Ridgetop Circle in Sterling. Nabra’s mother shared that detectives informed that her daughter had also been struck with a metal bat.
