The natural hair community is mourning the loss of a veteran who has kicked open doors in the beauty realm, a sweet soul. Tameka “Meechy” Monroe (@meechymonroe), one-half of the the infamous Monroe sisters (the other Vaughn @MsVaughnTV) took the industry by storm in casually documenting their hair transitions from chemical to natural states. Their endless tutorials caught on amongst African-American women, and garnered more than 3 million YouTube views. Meechy tragically passed away at the age of 32, following a long and hard-fought battle with a rare brain tumor.

We were first rocked with the tough news of Meechy being diagnosed with a life-threatening rare sarcoma in 2014. After undergoing treatment, she appeared to be on the incline after the announcement that the cancer had gone into remission. She later, in 2015, suffered an unexplained stroke, which left her with some numbness, speech slurring and facial drooping. As a labor of love, she chose to donate her gorgeous hair to Locks of Love – a non-profit for cancer patients experiencing hair loss.

Through it all, she remained a shining light – using her journey as a means to educate on her heartbreaking diagnosis. This is such a huge loss, as she has touched the lives of others so selflessly – many who have never even met her face-to-face.

Rest Meechy.
