Whether you’re considering your next vehicle purchase, or are officially on the market to let the car shopping begin, doing due diligence is key. As with any major purchase, tons of time and research will be required. And there are also those instances where you live and you learn the hard way, which makes for a more (hopefully) well-informed experience down the line. And then, if you’re like me, there is the added layer of searching for a vehicle conducive to a growing family. That in itself can be exciting, yet nerve-wrecking.

Here are some things to keep in mind while on the hunt for an affordable, reliable vehicle:

DO YOUR RESEARCH

Emergencies happen, and it is understood that some may not have the adequate time to do a lot of back-and-forth as it comes to car shopping, but it is important to be efficient with the time you do have. Besides, we want to avoid making a major purchasing decision that we would later regret. Now, this is not to say that we will get it “right” all the time, but a bit of due diligence could end up saving time and money down the line.

There are so many tools and resources right at our fingertips for searching  a vehicle. For instance, Cars.com is dedicated to helping its users narrow down the best options for their preferences, budget and lifestyle. Just think about all the time one would save using an online database, versus going on a traveling from dealership-to-dealership empty-handed?

DON’T RUSH YOUR DECISION

In your searching, it is imperative to read product reviews, the history of the car (if used, Lemon Report), as well as consult with family and friends on their experiences with a particular vehicle brand. These factors may appear small, but are guaranteed to weigh heavily on your final decision.

DO COMPARE PRICES AND SCHEDULE TEST DRIVES

The beauty of online resources is that once you have collected your research, you can pinpoint your perfect vehicle and begin to compare prices. Cars.com is a one-stop-shop that gives you the models, pricing, locations and reviews on your top choices. Once you have selected some vehicles of interest, you are now ready to schedule your appointment with the dealership. Be sure to ask questions and take them out on a test drive to ensure that you truly enjoy the safety and comforts. If you will be transporting a family, consider the spacing for baby carriers and booster seats, as well as trunk space for road trips and groceries.

DO THINK AHEAD

Depending on where you are or want to be in life, it is important to think ahead. How long do you wish to keep the car? Who will be riding in it primarily? If you are anticipating growing your family, a 2-seater or 2-door vehicle may not be as feasible as it once was.

DO CONSIDER “EXTRA” OVERHEAD COSTS

When you’re ready to make the final decision, please keep in mind the added costs of maintaining a vehicle and keeping it compliant outside of the traditional car note. Will you be purchasing a warranty? You will most definitely need insurance coverage, as well as incorporate the costs of regularly scheduled maintenance into your budgets. Lastly, even after the purchase has been made, stay alert to any potential safety recalls that may come down the pipe with regards to your vehicle, and schedule corrections as soon as possible.
