Tarana Burke, social activist and originator of the #MeToo movement, will kick-off the iconic New Year’s Eve ball drop at NYC’s Times Square. For more than a decade, Burke has been working with victims of sexual assault.

“I think it’s fitting to honor the Me Too movement as we close a historic year and set our intentions for 2018. With the new year comes new momentum to fuel this work and we won’t stop anytime soon.” – Tarana Burke

The #MeToo movement gained steam when sexual assault allegations against producer Harvey Weinstein, and a host of others within the media and entertainment industry began to come to the light. Actress Alyssa Milano used the #MeToo hashtag as a campaign to get other victims to come forward and tell their stories of sexual harassment publicly. To date, the hashtag has received a flurry of responses from women and men from all walks of life wanting their voices to be heard. This led to mass resignations and firings across the board of those abusing positions of power.
