It has been confirmed that Erica Garner – a daughter, mother, aunt, friend, fighter, and warrior, has died at age 27. Erica had been hospitalized just recently after suffering a heart attack, and had been in a medically-induced coma. We have been tracking her progress and tuning in for any updates via her official Twitter account, which was being managed by a family rep.

She was the eldest daughter of the late Eric Garner – a victim of police brutality, who died after being placed into a deadly chokehold by the NYPD. The last haunting words he managed to utter were, “I can’t breathe”. This sparked a continued national movement against state violence, with a heartbroken Erica at the center fighting for justice. Eric Garner’s justice never came.

No, we didn’t deserve her. And she deserved to live out the best years of her life enjoying the love of her children, family and friends…not fighting against a system that wasn’t designed for us.

Rest well, my sister. Thank you for your unapologetic voice. Your life mattered, and we will never stop telling your story.
