The exit of Al Franken (D-Minn.), following groping allegations against women, not only left his Senate seat up for grabs; it also opened up a slot on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) wasted no time in advising that Chuck Schumer (D-NY) put either Senator Cory Booker (D-NY) or Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) in place to fill the vacancy. In an unexpected and surprising move, Democrats invited both Booker and Harris to serve on the committee. Note, the committee has not had a Black member serving on it since the 90s.

This was all made possible by the election of Senator Doug Jones (D-Ala.) in his defeat over Roy Moore, which limited the Republican advantage on the Judicial and Finance Committees.
